Post Game Field Maintenance

Routine Daily Ballfield Maintenance1

Upon completion of the game or practice:

1.) Have each team pickup trash and police dugout and spectator areas.
2.) Rake, fill and smooth low spots at:
A) Home plate / batters boxes
B) Pitchers Circle
C) First, Second and Third base.
3.) Remove bases and clear dirt from underneath so that each base lies flat on infield surface.
4.) If available, use a hand drag to smooth infield surface.
5.) Water field (A manual sprinkler head is located behind the pitching rubber of many fields).
Option A: If available, turn on infield sprinkler system for three revolutions.
Option B: Empty team water jugs at homeplate and pitchers rubber. Try to distribute water evenly and rake into dusty soil. Five gallons of water goes a long way toward repairing and filling low spots at home plate and the pitchers circle.
Option C: If the field is dusty and a water source available, connect hose and water field by hand.
6.) Return all league equipment to storage shed, lock-up and turn off lights as per each fields requirement.

With 3 or 4 volunteers, steps 1-5 above will only take a few coordinated minutes. The positive effect on field conditions is significant. Coaches: recruit a couple parents that begin this process while you are having your post game discussion. When the team talk is concluded, jump in and help complete the field maintenance responsibilities.

Coaches, players, parents and fans:

Taking the time to do a small project goes a long way toward improving field conditions. While watching your daughter practice, pull some weeds from around spectaor bleachers or along a fence line. Players and coaches can pick up rocks and stones from the infield. Don't throw rocks into the outfield or foul territory, put them in the trash can. If you want a little aerobic activity, trade in your stairmaster for a rake and shovel and tackle a little bigger project. It's cheaper than a health club memebership ... and everybody in the league will benefit!

Local Girls Softball Leagues get very little outside assistance for field maintenance. If everybody: coaches, players, moms and dads will give four or five minutes effort everytime they go to the fields ... all our fields will look great.

Note: Fields listed above are permitted to FCGSL on a limited basis. Some fields are summer season or fall season use only. Others are permitted only for one-to-two nights per week . While FCGSL may have limited use of the fields ... we still have a vested interest in the fields condition and/or amenities.




At South Lakes, Edison and Madison High Schools you turn field lights on with a key inserted in the access box shown above. There is no need for access to the electrical panel.
