Fastpitch Gains Council Status
March 2000
Girls Faspitch Softball has gained direct representation on
the Fairfax County Atletic Council (FCAC). The FCAC is a policy and
advisory citizen board to the Department of Community and Recreation
Services.
Nearly three years ago, Fairfax Athletic Inequities Reform (FAIR)
requested fastpitch representation on the FCAC. It is expected
that at the March 20, 2000 Board of Supervisors Meeting that the
BOS will formally recognize fastpitch as a voting member of the
FCAC and that Mike Congleton (BRYC) will be appointed as the first
Fastpitch Softball representative.
Congleton was elected President of the recently formed Fairfax
County Fastpitch Softball Council. The council will serve as a
liasion between girls fastpitch softball and the FCAC/Department
of Community and Recreation Services.
Local Tournaments Fill Slate
February 1999
FCGSL Teams will have a rare opprotunity this summer to
(partly) fill their summer tournament slate with local fastpitch
tournaments. In addition to PONY Nationals which returns to
Sterling for the fourth year, several other local tournaments
are available to summer teams.
Leading off the tournament schedule is the BRYC Cherry Blossom
Classic (PONY Qualifier) to be held April 17th for 10&U, 12&U
and 14&U teams. The Mt. Vernon Booster Club will again host
three Fastpitch Tournaments, including the "Earlybird" May 1st
and the Mt. Vernon Classic the weekends of May 29th and June 5th.
FCGSL will host a PONY National Qualifier on July 17th. All of the
above are PONY National Qualifiers.
In addition to locally held ASA Metros, an 18&U National Qualifier
will be held the weekend of July 17th. The ASA Northeast Zone
Nationals will be held in Fairfax from August 10-15th. Contact
Rich Haver for additional information on the ASA Tournaments.
With the Sterling "Firecracker" Tournament the week of July 4th
in Loudoun County, a PONY qualifier in Prince William and several
tournaments in nearby Maryland ... Fairfax County Fastpitch Teams
enter a new era in girls softball. The cost of playing summer
softball has potentially been reduced significantly for Fairfax
teams now that several opprotunities to play local tournaments
are available.
